A Red velvet cake is a cake with a dark red, bright red or red-brown color. It is usually prepared as a layer cake with either a vanilla or chocolate flavor, topped with a creamy white icing. Common ingredients are buttermilk, butter, flour, cocoa, and beetroot or red food coloring (beetroot is traditionally used). The amount of cocoa used varies in different recipes. Cream cheese frosting is most commonly paired with the cake, as well as buttercream.

Cafe World's Red Velvet Cake
I first encounted this particular dessert in Cafe World, a game I play in facebook.  I think it was only a limited edition item/food in that game.  It looked like this.

*********************************rm********************************

A friend of mine who doesn't really have a sweet tooth  once told me that he has tasted the best cake ever!   It was introduced to him by his officemate in Manila.  Actually, my friend's officemate told him that said cake was no good.  All the while, he was just being sarcastic.  He just didn't want to share the said cake.

In the end however, my friend was still able to taste it.  Nom...nom...nom...  Picky as he is, at that  very moment my friend was left with no choice  but to declare that he had been converted and had become a fan of that cake.

"Ows? Is that so?" and I just nodded my head in agreement.  How can I relate?  That's like a story of a friend of a friend.   You know , I guess it's safe to assume that we all have that case in our lives wherein we know a person's name, address, the school she went into, her boyfriend, exboyfriend, pets, craziness, etc.. but all of these are according to our friend's stories.

All the ideas we have about that person are all in our heads.  You kind of know that person yet you don't.   So yeah, that was the  relationship between my friend's cake and myself.      That cake and my taste buds have yet to cross paths. That was Year 2010.

When my friend finally decided to go back and stay here in Davao, he hasn't forgotten about that cake.  Whenever we eat out and dessert time comes, he can't help but talk about "that cake".  I just tell him everytime, "Ay now I really am curious about "that cake"! By the way, the main reason I haven't tasted it yet is because there is no franchise of the store that sells that cake here in Davao.

One time, after a friend's wedding, the gehls and I decided to hang out in Blugre Landco.  I suddenly saw this oval shaped cake with a  screaming sign of red velvet.   I thought it was "the cake" of my friend so I ordered one.   I loved it!!! Not too sweet and yet so creamy.  I wasn't able to take a photo of blugre's red velvet at that time but one blogger posted a  valentine's version of that cake.  Here it is:

I immediately told my friend the news. "They have red velvet in blugre!"  Let's order the next time we meet!  And so one day  we decided to go to Blugre Matina which was nearer to us both since we're both from the South. Unfortunately, the Blugre's branch in MTS don't have red velvet in their menu. Darn, so much for my useless boasting!

We just went to Landco on another day.  My friend liked the cake but it was not "his cake".   According to him, the one in Margies tasted nearer to "his cake" although the first was much sweeter.  The first I have yet to taste.   I believe this is the Margie's Bakeshop version:

Last weekend of February 2011 arrived .  Another close friend of mine went to Manila.  Before he left, I used my supah charm and requested him to please buy UCC's red velvet cake and bring it back as pasalubong.   Lo and behold, the branch in greenbelt was closed.  But this kindhearted soul tried the other branches and was finally able to buy one.

Monday morning I got a "wake up sms" from him.   "Your red velvet is in the office, just come and get it."   Yebah!  Despite his office being out of the way of my destination for the evening, I hailed a cab and went there 15 minutes prior to my other appointment.  It was all worth it! Now I do understand why my friend fell in love with this cake.  Sorry, but now it is no longer "his cake".  It is now OUR cake!  I wonder who'll be going to Manila again soon? UCC red velvet cake pls!!!!!

This is what my friend brought me.  Being a typical guy, he just placed it inside his bag, hence the "seems like a mice has already taken a bite of it" look!

this is the original version I believe . photo as found in: http://manilareviews.com/2010/06/karens-kitchen-red-velvet-cake-ucc.html
